This is one of the best snorkeling beaches on the Big Island. We were at one of the other beaches and asked a local if there were any green sea turtles near by. We were directed to visit Kahalu'u if we wanted to see a turtle because "they are always there". Later that evening we stopped by Kahalu'u to check it out since it was only 10 minutes from the beach home we were staying at Kawena Place. I didn't expect this but I enjoyed this beach more than my last two visits to two step (Honaunau Bay). I only wish I had my underwater camera because this was the best place to photograph the fish. At two step, the fish swim away when you get closer to take pictures. At Kahalu'u, the fish were swimming up to me while I was patiently watching a green sea turtle slow swim around. At one point, I could see three turtles by only moving my head 90 degrees. I was absolutely amazed. My wife really enjoyed the sunset from Kahalu'u. As the sun started to set, a native Hawaiian with a conche shell blew into the shell to signal the setting of the sun. When she tells the story she always mentions how muscular and toned he was as well. Around the corner another Hawaiian was playing a ukulele and singing songs. My wife and I thought someone was going to jump out and say we were on a "punked" show or something. This was actually a normal weekend evening as the sun went down. I thought this would only happen in movies. Did I mention this was one of the best sunsets of the 8 days I was on the island for this trip? This is one of my favorite beaches and our three daughters loved this beach as well. The beach features: - Snorkeling
- Rentals
- Food
- Restrooms
- Storage
- Showers
